Our Origin
Mount Carmel has its roots dating back to the year 1934, established with the noble mission of promoting education for girls during a time when women’s education was not widely encouraged. The institution was founded by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa (CSST), a women’s religious congregation founded by Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima.
The school began at Kanjikuzhy, on the outskirts of Kottayam town, with a humble beginning of just 15 students and 3 teachers under the dedicated leadership of Mother Claire. The first Bishop of the Diocese of Vijayapuram, Dr. Bonaventura Arana OCD, extended his blessings and valuable support for this noble educational mission. Along with Mother Claire, Rev. Sisters Aloysius, Dennis, Ananciata, Stanislaus, and Mother Gabriel played an important role as the pioneering members of the institution.
In the year 1947, as India celebrated independence, Mount Carmel was elevated to the status of a High School. The institution continued its journey of excellence and proudly celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of becoming a High School in 2007. Today, the school functions under the Corporate Educational Agency of the Diocese of Vijayapuram.
History of the Institute
The Institute of the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa (CSST) was founded in 1887 by Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima in Ernakulam, Kerala.
At a time when society was deeply affected by poverty, inequality, and social discrimination, Mother Teresa envisioned an institution that would restore dignity and opportunity to every individual through education and compassionate service. She strongly believed that every human being is a child of God and deserves the right to live with dignity and respect.
Beginning with St. Teresa’s Convent in Ernakulam, she established educational institutions where students from all social and economic backgrounds were welcomed equally. In addition to education, she also founded orphanages, healthcare services, industrial schools for the poor, and homes for the elderly. Her mission extended beyond education as she personally cared for the sick during epidemics and worked tirelessly for the upliftment of marginalized communities.
Inspired by the vision and spirit of Mother Teresa of St. Rose of Lima, the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa continue their dedicated service in the fields of education, healthcare, and social development, carrying forward a legacy of compassion, dignity, and excellence.
